June 22, 2003 Photographs

These are digital photographs I snapped using a Sony Mavica digital still camera (MVC-FD-88) with built-in digital zoom (telephoto). Feel free to use them as you will. If you use them for commercial purposes I assume you'll disucss that with me.

This week is the start of summer, but in Los Angeles summer has started with a deep marine layer and dark clouds all day. So this week's photos are places that remind me of summer elsewhere.

Here's a place to sit and read on a summer afternoon. The Medici fountain in the Luxembourg gardens in Paris.

Not elsewhere but another time. The view from the office window last month before the heavy June clouds rolled in. The sun should return in early July.

My birthday is in late June. And I had dinner here on my birthday one year.

Rien que le décor follement Belle Epoque, avec sa façade en céramique, ses boiseries style nouille et son bel escalier en fer forgé qui fait face à l'originale porte à tambour, mérite le détour. Mais ce n'est pas le seul attrait de ce ravissant bistrot, qui nous régale depuis longtemps de grandes spécialités maison : soupe de poisson avec rouille et croûtons, foie de veau meunière, tranché bien épais et accompagné de gratin dauphinois, épaule de petit agneau du Limousin, admirablement savoureuse et fondante, servie entière pour deux personnes, crêpes Suzette flambées au Grand Marnier. Mais en plus, pendant tout le mois de novembre, ici comme à la "Lorraine", au "Procope" ou autres établissements des frères Blanc, on y sert un remarquable menu à 228 F, signé par Michel Guérard, célèbre triple étoilé Michelin. De quoi festoyer d'une terrine de jambon serrano au chou et lardons de foie gras de canard, puis d'une escalope de saumon frais d'Ecosse aux cèpes et rouelles d'oignons, et enfin d'un blanc manger de pomme reinette au caramel.

Not the best shot, but the sun setting at the crest of Laurel Canyon out here when the clouds lifted late in the afternoon, before the thick fog rolled in off the Pacific. And the usual palm tree one would expect.

When it is day after day of gloom in Hollywood it is best to smoke a French pipe.
